Frequently Asked Questions

General

  • What should I focus on?

It doesn't matter what you focus on. The main thing is that you focus, which is exactly what the feedback from Mentalytics training games will help you to do. So keep your eyes on the screen!

When you start the training, it might be a good idea to focus on something you see on the screen. But in general it’s not about what you focus on but rather that you try to obtain a focused mindset.

  • What is a focused mindset?

When you give your full attention to something; what you are doing, what is happening, what you are listening to etc. then you have a focused mindset - or easier put, you’re focused.

  • How can I transfer my trained focus to what I do in life?

The training-game has given you continuous (bio)feedback of the level of your focus during our 30DaysChallenge. You should now be able to recognize your feeling of being focused - your body, your brain and your intellect should now know how to set yourself in a focused state of mind, performing a completely other task than playing the training game.

The brain is a muscle that needs to be continuously trained as any other muscle; make sure to keep up the training at least twice a week.

  • What is a session?

A session is one training or tracking event with a defined start and stop.

  • What is Focus Score?

The value represents the level of your focus presented in the very moment or as a media value from one or more sessions. The value is the result from the Mentalytics algorithm. The higher Focus Score, the better.

  • What is a good Focus Score?

Based on our data so far, a good Focus Score is around 70.

  • What is Sustained Focus?

The value represents how well you manage to maintain your focus relative to your own media Focus Score (continuously recalculated in real time) during a session. The value is given as a percentage of the time of the session. The higher Sustained Focus, the better.

  • What is a good Sustained Focus?

Based on our data so far, a good Sustained Focus is around 75%.

  • How do I control the ball in the training module?

The ball is programmed to go faster (see below regarding Level though) and smarter, the better you focus. Science can’t identify when you’re thinking left or right e.g., only the level of focus.

  • What does Level shown beside the ball in the training game mean?

There are bad focus days and there are good focus days. For you to find the training game motivating all days, we alter the level of focus required (continuously recalculated in real time) for the ball to roll forward. It is important to understand that the Level only impacts the speed of the ball in the training game, not your actual measured and registered focus.

  • What is EEG?

EEG stands for Electro Encephalon Graphics. It’s a method used within medicine since the 60s to measure the electrical signals from the brain. (Similar to EKG, the method of measuring the electrical signals from the heart.) Science has since concluded, in numerous studies, that you can identify different mental or emotional states of mind using EEG, one of which is focus.

  • What is the difference between Mentalytics and Muse?

Both Mentalytics and Muse (InteraXon) measure focus using EEG. It is up to you to compare the price/performance of our respective offers including both a headband and software.

  • What is the difference between Mentalytics and Mendi?

Mentalytics use the well-established technique EEG (see above) in our products. Scientifically proven to have an effect when training focus. Mendi uses fNIR. The technique measures the blood flow on the forehead. For more information about fNIR we refer to external sources of choice.
